About us

We are NUBIA BREW:
Atoma, Asrat AND Abate.

We were born in Ethiopia and grew up in eastern Switzerland. We feel connected to both places and this connection also shapes our NUBIA BREW. Here, African and Swiss brewing traditions come together, ancient grains meet fresh spring water.

Brewing beer in Ethiopia and Switzerland

Beer has been brewed commercially in Switzerland since the 17th century and is considered the national drink. However, the origins of beer go back much further and to ancient Nubia, among other places. The Nubians in turn adopted the art of brewing from the ancient Egyptians. Even today, Ethiopian families brew their beers according to traditional recipes. The brew is called "Tela", and in addition to hops, the regional plant Gescho is used as a bittering agent. Apart from various types of wheat, sorghum varieties such as dagussa, teff and mashilla form the basis for the beer. These original grains also give NUBIA BREW its distinctive taste.
